Visits to Aged Old Girls of a Decade: 1940 - 1949

Part I - 1947 Year Group

The Executives of OGA deem it right and fitting to embark on a series of visits to some of the oldest surviving members of the ancient Year Groups. Being among some of the early entrants into Wesley Girls’ High School to receive the excellent training and education that our School is known for, they remain an integral part of the historical accounts of our great institution.

On Sunday 1st August, the searchlight began with the 1947 Year Group. The OGA Executive Committee visited two members of the 1947 Year Group in Accra: Madam Margaret Quao and Madam Akua Budu and presented them with colourful OGA hampers.

At Margaret Quao’s Kanda residence, OGA National President, Effie Simpson and Public Relations Officer, Afua Ababio spent time with her to reminisce about our school. The 95 year-old Mrs. Quao remembered some events from her school days and was full of praise for the OGA as she expressed appreciation for the visit.

The OGA delegation was delighted to find her very fit and full of energy. To the amazement of all present, she recited the school motto with precision.

At the Lashibi residence of 93 year-old Ekua Budu, Vice President Jeannette Quarcoopome joined the team to spend some quality time with her and to wish her well. She was touched by the fact that the OGA still remembered her even though she left the school 75 years ago.

The programme to visit elderly and aged Old Girls was planned last year by the OIGA Welfare Committee, but had to be put on hold due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It has been resumed and visits to members of the 1948 and 1949 Year Groups are ongoing.

We thank God for the lives of these Matriarchs.
